Back to the Future Day History

The iconic and epic Back to the Future series gave millions of people in 1985 a glimpse of what the Future could be like. Of course, we didn’t get time travel or hoverboards, but we did get an interesting look at how the Future would look like, and it was a revolutionary movie for the 80s. More on that later. Back to the Future day is celebrated on October 21 because that is the date when Marty McFly originally travels to the past and sets in motion his undoubtedly existential adventure.

Gale and Zemeckis conceived the idea for Back to the Future for the first time in 1980. They were desperate for a successful film after numerous collaborative failures. Still, the project was rejected over 40 times by various studios because it was not considered raunchy enough to compete with the successful comedies of the era. Finally, a development deal was secured with Universal Pictures following Zemeckis’s success directing the film called Romancing the Stone in 1984.

Back to the Future was released on July 3, 1985, and it was a critical and commercial success, earning $381.1 million to become the highest-grossing film of 1985 worldwide. Critics praised the story, humorous elements, and the cast, particularly the role of Fox, Lloyd, Thompson, and Glover. It received multiple nominations and won an Academy Award, three Saturn Awards, and a Hugo Award. Its theme song, “The Power of Love” by Huey Lewis and the News, was also successful.

Back to the Future has since grown in esteem and is now considered by critics and audiences to be one of the greatest science-fiction films and among the best films ever made. In 2007, the United States Library of Congress selected the film for preservation in the National Film Registry. The film was followed by two sequels, Back to the Future Part II (1989) and Back to the Future Part III (1990).

Back to the Future Day Significance

In the original film, set in 1985, the story follows Marty McFly (Fox), a teenager accidentally sent back to 1955 in a time-traveling DeLorean automobile built by his eccentric scientist friend Emmett “Doc” Brown (Lloyd). While in the past, Marty inadvertently prevents his future parents from ever falling in love, thus threatening his existence, and he is forced to reconcile the pair and somehow get back to the Future. Today this plot doesn’t look that impressive, but for the time, it was a revolutionary moment in the film industry.

The main theme of Back to the Future concerns taking control and personal responsibility over one’s destiny: A situation can be changed even if it seems impossible to overcome. Thompson said the film represents how one moment can have a significant and lasting impact on a person’s life. Gale believed Doc provided the perfect summary of the series’ running theme, when in Back to the Future Part III, he said: “Your future is whatever you make it, so make it a good one.”

Since its release, Back to the Future has remained an enduring popular culture touchstone. In 2007, the United States Library of Congress selected the film for preservation in the National Film Registry for being culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant. In addition, the film elevated Fox from a financially struggling actor to one of Hollywood’s most in-demand and globally recognized stars. Gale received fan mail for it even after decades of its release.

In the original film, there are various plot twists and turns, but what makes the film worthy of its honorary day is the vision of early prototypes of today’s technology, like large flat screens, virtual reality eyewear, video conferencing, computer tablets, and biometric scanners. Back to the Future deserves viewing from every science fiction fan and continually holds up as a fun, energetic tour through time with some memorable characters and truly great catchphrases.
