Lord Krishna was born in Mathura to Devaki and Vasudeva on the eighth day (Ashtami) of Krishna Paksha in the month of Shraavana. Before His birth, a prophecy was made that the eighth son of Devaki would be the reason for the downfall of King Kansa, the brother of Devaki. To prevent this prophecy from becoming a reality, Kansa threw his sister and his husband in prison, and there was an order to kill all their eight sons as soon as they were born. Kansa successfully killed the first six children of Devaki and Vasudeva, but at the time of the birth of the seventh child, Balarama, the fetus miraculously got transferred to the womb of Rohini, Vasudeva’s first wife. The time came, and the eighth child of Devaki, Krishna, wasborn at exactly midnight on the eighth day of Krishna Paksha in Shraavana. Right after His birth, all the security of the prison got disabled, and again an oracle appeared, asking Vasudeva to rescue the baby and give him to Nand Baba and Yashodha in Vrindavan. Vasudeva fulfilled the oracle, carried the baby to Vrindavan, and returned to prisonwith a baby girl. When Kansa sees the baby girl, he tries to kill her but throws her onto the grounds. Instead, she rose in the air, transformed into goddess Durga, and warned Kansa that his destiny would be fulfilled and the one he fears has already been born.
