Sadbhavana Divas 2022

Sadbhavana Divas

Sadbhavna Divas is celebrated annually all across the country on August 20. The day is also referred to as Harmony Day. The late Prime Minister of India, Rajiv Gandhi, is commemorated on this day as August 20 marks the birth anniversary of the former Prime Minister.

The literal meaning of Sadhbhavna is “having good feelings for others”, and this was only the mission of Rajiv Gandhi’s government as he believed in peace and harmony all around; thus, a celebration of Rajiv’s birth anniversary as Sadhbhavna Diwas is a step towards his leftover mission.

Sadhbhavna Day Celebrations

Various cultural festivals and competitions are organized on Sadhbhavna Diwas in almost all states. Sadhbhavna Diwas is also associated with conserving greenery, preservation of natural beauty and protection of the environment, and conservation of natural resources. The central theme of different programs on Sadhbhavna Diwas is to raise awareness about these crucial environmental concerns among compatriots. The plantation is also highly encouraged on this day.

Compatriots pay homage to great Indian leaders and former prime ministers of the country—all govt. Dignitaries, ministers, congress party members and members of the Gandhi Family, including Sonia Gandhi, president of the Congress party, pay tribute to Rajiv Gandhi at Rajiv Gandhi’s memorial, Veer Bhumi.

The Rajiv Gandhi Foundation distributes Rajeev Gandhi National Awards to recognize the excellence achieved by Indians in different fields every year. This year 2022, will mark the 77th birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi.

Sadbhavana Diwas History

This day was created by the All India Congress Committee of the Indian National Congress in remembrance of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. Along with this day, Rajiv Gandhi Sadbhavana Award was also launched in 1992.
Every year this award is given to those who have devoted their lives to understanding and promoting social harmony. Prize money of 10 lakhs rupees is also given at this moment.
Rajiv Gandhi was the youngest Prime Minister of India as he became the country’s Prime Minister at the age of 40, soon after the assassination of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, his mother. So yeah, Rajiv Gandhi comes from the dynastic politics of the Gandhi family.
Rajiv Gandhi did notable work by reducing the measures to ease the License Raj. But, as before him, her mother did the opposite and stricted the License Raj, which primarily affected the country’s economy. He also established voting rights at the age of 18 and also formed the Panchayati Raj.

Sadbhavana Diwas Significance

Rajiv Gandhi was a prominent supporter of youth power as he said that the country’s development depends only on the awareness of the country’s youth. And thus, he also formed a Jawahar Rojgar Yojana to hive employment opportunities to the youth.
Rajiv Gandhi served as the Prime Minister from 1984-89. Well, he was one of the most controversial PMs of the country as well due to his alleged support to the Tamil Tigers at first during the Sri Lankan Civil War; however, later, he realized and made the Indian Army carried out operations in support of the Sri Lankan Army and this also cause his assassination as a terrorist blew him up at a public event.
Despite all his controversies, he ruled India for a complete full term and thus did many things during his reign. Some of my favourite things include the signing of the Assam accords, the introduction of the new education policy to reform the education system, the creation of MTNL to spread PCOs around India, and many other steps.

Sadbhavana Diwas Observance

On this day, in honour of his birth anniversary, close family members of Rajiv Gandhi and senior Congress officials pay tributes to him. They also lay wreaths on Veer Bhoomi, the site where he was cremated.
On Sadbhavana Diwas in India, many cultural events and contests are held across the states and cities. This day is also related to the maintenance of greenery, nature, environmental protection and biodiversity conservation. So planting saplings are also proposed on this day.
The main goal of many events on Sadbhavana Diwas is to promote citizens’ consciousness regarding challenges society faces like inequality, discrimination, environmental challenges, poverty and several other issues.
